UNITED NATIONS
DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Agenda: Stabilising Vital Health and Human Services in Combat Zones

Letter from the Chairperson

Swasti Phalswal

Greetings Delegates,

I am Swasti Phalswal, and I am assuming the role of the Chairperson of the United Nations Development Programme in the Shishukunj MUN 2022. It is my distinct honour to welcome you to this prestigious event. I’m currently in grade XII, and this is my third year of association with the Model United Nations conferences. My hobbies include writing, reading, dancing, and participating in high endurance activities such as marathons and cyclothons. I also enjoy travelling and undertaking adventure activities.

I think MUN is an interesting platform that connects international relations and science because it exposes a person to real problems out there and challenges one to think about scientific solutions. Participating in MUNs plays a major role in personality development and helps inculcate skills such as diplomacy, leadership, communication,consensus-building, and critical thinking.

UNDP is one of the most important organs of the UN and its main aim is to help people build a better life. This year, the agenda is “Stabilising Vital Health and Human Services in Combat Zones”. We will discuss and debate the specifics of the problem, and the various issues, and find solutions for the same. I hope I will be able to make this MUN  a memorable learning experience for you all. I will be more than happy to answer your questions before, during, and after the conference.

Regards

Swasti Phalswal

Organ Description

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) plays a central role in the development activities of the United Nations and coordinates efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It helps nations to implement democracy and good governance, reduce poverty, to prevent crises and conflicts, protect the environment, and fight HIV/AIDS. Sustainable human development is at the core of the agenda, which strives to enlarge people’s choices by expanding their capabilities and opportunities in ways that are sustainable from the economic, social and environmental standpoints, benefiting the present without compromising the future.

Agenda: Stabilizing Vital Health and Human Services in Combat Zones

Combat zones are those areas that offer a setting for military operations and terrorist activities. People who live or serve in combat zones often have limited access to basic human rights. They face threatening physical consequences like death, injury, sexual violence, malnutrition, illnesses, and disability in addition to mental illnesses such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. Limited access to clean water, food, and sanitation leads to the risk of them contracting communicable diseases. Statistics show that one out of five people living in conflict zones have mental health issues, thus the development of proper healthcare facilities in such areas can make a positive change in the lives of numerous civilians as well as the combatants.
With the emergence of such sensitive issues, many nations have a lot at stake and it is essential to discuss these issues and develop laws and reforms that can protect these nations and the people from these difficult situations.
