Organ Description

Hailed as the most powerful United Nations body, the United Nations Security Council has the primary responsibility of maintaining international peace and security. In the event of a disruption of regional peace, the UNSC calls upon the conflicted parties to settle it by peaceful means and recommends resolutions or settlements. The UN Charter provides the UNSC with the ability to utilize military action in the pursuit of international peace and security. The UNSC also plays an important role in the deployment of the UN peacekeeping forces.

Agenda: Addressing the Armenia - Azerbaijan Conflict with Reference to the Nagorno Karabakh Enclave

Nagorno-Karabakh is a mountainous region in southwestern Azerbaijan. As the USSR saw increasing tensions in its constituent republics in the 1980s, Nagorno-Karabakh voted to become a part of Republic of Armenia - sparking a war between Armenia and Azerbaijan that stopped with a ceasefire in 1994.

Since then, Nagorno-Karabakh has remained a part of Azerbaijan. It is however controlled by separatist ethnic Armenians backed by the Armenian government. Till recently, negotiations mediated by international powers were unable to deliver a peace agreement. This session of UNSC has been called to find solutions to resolve the Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict.
