Organ Description
UNODC was established in 1997 to assist the UN in better addressing various issues. It serves as a cooperative body between all states in the fight against drug trafficking and production, abuse of drugs, crime prevention, criminal justice, terrorism, and corruption etc. Other than this, the other areas falling under the committee’s mandate include anti-corruption, criminal justice, prison reform and crime prevention, drug prevention, treatment and care, human trafficking, migrant smuggling, money laundering, organized crime, piracy, and terrorist prevention.
Agenda: Countering Illicit Drug Production and Trafficking
One of the most complex and dire issues the world is facing now is the illicit production and trafficking of drugs. For the ease of the committee, the agenda has been divided into two parts, illicit drug production, and illicit drug trafficking. The drug producing countries have surplus production of drugs, which was started either traditionally or by the design of illegal producers. Drug trafficking is an illegal trade of drugs involving the cultivation, manufacturing, and distribution of drugs. The global illicit drug trafficking market is constantly evolving, undermining economic and social development and contributing to crime, instability, and insecurity. The damage caused by drug trafficking and production is reflected in the loss productivity of businesses, decline in literacy rates, rise in youth death rates, and environmental destruction. The pandemic has led to an increase in the number of drug users around the world. We expect the delegates to discuss and debate this predicament and come up with innovative solutions to curb the problem.
